These books support parents who want to talk to their children about their conception with medical assistance. The book “Das Geheimnis des ehrenwerten Hauses” (The secrets of the honorable house” is a Detektive story for children of 8 years and older about very normal families that are a little bit different.
These Books are only available in print.
The BKiD training manual “Psychosoziale Kinderwunschberatung im Rahmen der Gametenspende” (Psychosocial counselling in the area of third party conception) can be used by Professionals who are interested in this area of counselling. The conference proceedings “Alles, was Recht ist?!” is based on all the presentations of the first Erlanger Confernece on family building by donor insemination.
These Books are also available in print.
For many couples, having children is their greatest wish, for some, however, fulfilling this wish turns out to be an enormous challenge. Approx. 8% of all individuals between 20 and 50 years suffer from infertility. They require medical assistance in order to have a child. The experience of infertility and the necessity of medical treatment can be associated with psychological, social and above all emotional strain. In addition, some treatments such as donor insemination remain associated with a stigma: for most it is not easy to talk to others about this family building alternative.
FamART is a small German publisher founded in 2006. It has published books for families built with medical assistance and/or donor insemination. These books aim to support those undergoing treatment and planning to share the type of conception with their children and others. It has also published books for parents and professionals. The acronym FamART is composed by the words Family building with the help of Assisted Reproductive Treatment. In a more abstract and metaphorical sense, it also refers to the fact that for some couples, building a family really is an „art“ that can require hard work and nothing that occurs spontaneously.
Since 2006, 8 books have been published. There are books for heterosexual and lesbian families who have used donor insemination and families in which children were conceived by medical treatments such as inseminations, IVF or ICSI. Some of these books are available in German, others in German and in English and some as PDFs. There are also books that provide guidance for parents and training for professionals. I hope you enjoy looking at this website and the book extracts. In the near future, the children’s books will become available as Epubs. You can download the current FamART programme by clicking the grafic underneath the contact form.
Here, on the eFamART website, all the PDFs and E-Books are available. Please bear in mind that it can take up to three working days until your orders are processed. The same applies for individualized books for children as these are produced with photos of your child and your families (see example). At FamART all the printed books are available. You are automatically forwarded if you click on a printed book.
If you have questions or suggestions, I am looking forward to your email.
PS. On the website of Dr. Petra Thorn’s practice you can subscribe a blog on recent developments in the area of infertility and medical treatment. Sometime she also blogs in English. Also, there are numerous Links to related topics.

Psychosocial Infertility Counselling
As a social worker and family therapist I have been working in private practice for over 20 years with a focus on infertility counselling. From the beginning on, I have supported couples to disclose their use of donor treatment to their children. During the counselling sessions and during seminars, I notice how difficult this remains for parents. They would like to be open and honest but fear negative reactions.
Books for Children
In some English speaking countries, in the 1990ies, several books were published that support parental disclosure. About 10 years ago, these books inspired me to write something similar in German. I found Tiziana Rinaldi, an Italian artist, who drew the wonderful illustrations depicting the dreamlike and easy-going way young children sometimes have.
Books for Professionals and Parents
In the last years, I have published several books with her for different family types. In addition, colleagues asked whether I would publish their books on related issues. This has become the current programme of FamART. Here, on eFamART you can order Epubs and PDFs. I am sure there will be more books soon …
